How can we remove doubt? How can we really ‘believe’?

Doubt is a very common attribute of a human being. It is a sort of “protection” embedded in our reasoning and logic for us to try to think more critically about a certain aspect or philosophy or principle or whatever in our lives. It is something to protect us for the purpose of us going out there and unlock the protection to be really free. Doubt exists for us to verify something – much like how goldsmiths refine gold, in order for us to have full freedom to believe.

If you’ve been following my blog and the comments, this question came from Charles. It is a very good question because many people are struggling with doubt and believing and “having faith” and this is my opportunity to explain it in the best way I can.

When you believe in God's person, you have no room for doub because of His love

When you believe in God's person, you have no room for doubt because of His love

Let’s face it, EVERYONE DOUBTS or has doubted at some point – especially in Christianity where we have a faith-based salvation and a faith-based love relationship with God. Doubt is very prevalent where faith is a must. Why? Because that is the way we are designed by God. If there is no such thing as doubt, we will never appreciate faith.

Now the question is, how can we really believe in God? I’ve tackled something like this in one of my posts: Getting rain drenched. Walking through the discomfort. Let me tell it straight to you – believing in God is not easy it is extremely difficult. Believing in God means knowing more of Him as a person.

The reason why people find it so hard to believe in God is that they are so FOCUSED on themselves. “God didn’t answer my prayers, therefore God doesn’t exist” or “God made me go through such a traumatic experience in my life, therefore how can I believe Him?”, “God allowed this to happen, He’s probably not paying me any mind, therefore I choose not to believe Him.” Can you see how self-centered these statements are? All these statements are saying is “It’s all about me! If things don’t go my way, God must be against me or He must not exist!”

Faith is NOT FOCUSING ON YOURSELF, it is NOT FOCUSING ON WHAT GOD CAN GIVE YOU, it is NOT BELIEVING THAT YOU HAVE ENOUGH FAITH, IT IS BELIEVING IN GOD AS A PERSON – a person who is so good and Holy and who loves you so much that even if He takes away everything, you will still believe Him because He created you and loves you so very much and He has promised that He has plans for you and He has never broken a promise. Not a single one.

self-centered

We keep doubting God when it gets uncomfortable for us

People have trouble believing God because they are focused on themselves. Can you see my point? Think about it.
Doubt is there not to drive you away from God, but to make you want to know more. The clues are out, the evidence is given and the advice is only too visible – READ THE BIBLE. Know more about the God who loves you and find out that life is not all about you. It’s all about God.

You think life being all about God makes God selfish? God is so great that He only has Himself to glorify. If you’re so big and so good and so great and awesome, would you glorify something or someone else? Of course not! I would not worship a god any less than the great and awesome God I have now. And the good thing about it is that HE HAS CLAIMED IT ALL. NO MORE GUESSING, NO MORE ROOM FOR DOUBT – JUST READ HIS WORD!

  1. It’s not about you/me/us :) It’s about Him. and He loves us. So it all works out :)

  2. Yeah! =D that’s the summary of it all =)) Thanks Patty!!!

  3. Glory to God!:D

  4. faith is believing, you dont see it but you feel it.

  5. I’ve read that entry about the rain.

This is always an argument for me, and some of my friends— Does God really exist— most of the pious I would ask about that would answer— “How dare you doubt God’s existence”— it will always end with something about my faith— Do I have enough faith, that I can believe that something like Him really exists. When there’s always the saying that “To see, is to believe.” How can I believe, and have faith when there is nothing to see— only do I have to believe that He did those miracles, the miracle of life— and some testimonials from all over the world. And then you said this: “it is NOT BELIEVING THAT YOU HAVE ENOUGH FAITH, IT IS BELIEVING IN GOD AS A PERSON.”

I remember when I attended my first service, it was curiousity and— okay, mockery (of the people attending, I was thinking it was OA to be jumping while praising, crying and raising your hands, doing those would be corny) at the same time (‘skeptic’ but a Catholic nevertheless, I’m sure you know how Catholics are, it’s called the dead church, sure they have charismatic groups but I think teachings are different, approach is different). Then The pastor asked, “Who wants to know God better.”— I raised my hand without thinking, since then I attended regularly, and yes, was encouraged to read more, — read the Bible, regularly. But things changed when, it just became a habit that I go there (I think I went there for the wrong reasons that time, it was a girl, LOL and some of that curiousity.), I was lost but still regularly reads, and accompanied my reading with the Purpose Driven Life book and some Daily Breads. Then set aside reading— because I’m not a fan of routine— I want change, so then came change, change in goals, in priorities. At highschool, top of my race (still remembers to pray and thank Him, offers some test, medals, etc.), then entered college (Catholic community) offered some deeds in glory for Him, but then after sometime, some lessons, some movies LOL (Da Vinci, etc.), everyday evil— I asked the question, does He really exist— “Have faith.” is always the answer for me. HAHAHA.

But then, I am afraid to think that there is no Him, and you know why— evil is everywhere (LOL, and okay hahaha— some said that I have to have faith because I am open and that will be my only protection, I don’t know how, just imagine exorcism), and what else is there to protect us if there is no Him, that is all the good in the world.

LOL, sobra haba, sorry hahaha naging blog entry na to. :P

Anyway, thanks for the entry! Na move yung friend ko, I asked him to read it.

  6. LOL mas naging IT’s ALL ABOUT ME, dahil ang haba ng comment ko :) ) Kaya pala VANITY is one of the seven deadly sin?!

  7. Hahaha xD It’s okay Charles! Wow ang haba ng reply mo! Glad you shared a part of you here. WE REALLY HAVE TO GO OUT AND MEET sometime. Eat out maybe? Richmond had some serious and deep questions too. Praise God He gave me wisdom to answer it sensibly. Now I’m trying to influence him more. Someday I wish to do the same with you.

You’re welcome! And thanks for the question. A lot of people are struggling wit this.

Also Vanity can be a serious sin IF it is placed above God. But if you ask me, it is a good thing in regulation because if you don’t have vanity, you’ll be a dirty, smelly person hahaha!

wow… thanks for posting this blog on doubt, ‘coz im having it right now…. hahahaha

right now, im reviewing for my nursing board exams this coming 29th and 30th diba?? and as the days pass by, im getting more and more anxious and doubtful, not just with the Lord, but also with myself…. and as i get even more doubtful of myself, i’m starting to doubt the Lord as well (for some weird reasons)…

but this blog, in some way, alleviated the doubt that im having with the Lord and as it happens, i started to believe in myself at the same time….

it’s IS hard not to doubt because once you and i let it set foot into our lives, it doesn’t leave without a fight…

thanks a lot Sean…. i will keep this blog in mind every time doubt will come knocking at my door….=)

This is one of the good reads! And I can also testify that the only thing that takes away my doubt is the very word of God. ;) It’s the only hope I can hold onto that keeps me going and pursuing and smiling.♥
